Hey all,
Just a quick blurb here to let you know what we’ve been up to. First of all, Lily is still diabetic…okay, you already knew that right? Secondly, we have been trying out a new “thing” I had heard about a while back via Sally Roman. On her website, she talks about her sons taking baking soda (in drinks) before bed time. This balances the pH and also helps diabetics stop the ‘dawn phenomenon’. So we thought we’d give it a go. But since the taste of baking soda, no matter how diluted, makes us sick (literally), I went to the health food store and picked up some empty capsules and made my own pills. I got size 0 capsules and I give her two to three before bed (depending on how high her BG is at that time). The other night, Lily ate dinner and forgot to take her insulin (Whoops!)….when we got home to check, her BG was 400. After having a heart attack myself, then wiping her tears of frustration away, she took her novolog, lantus, and three capsules of baking soda. She woke up at 126! Since then, we’ve been taking the pills in the morning, at dinner and bed time. It helps so much. I’m really looking forward to seeing her next A1C. Her last one was 7.4….too high for my liking, but the same as the one before it, so atleast it hasn’t gone up.
I’m going to see if I can get the pills online instead of making my own. Any suggestions?
Well, aside from that, life is pretty hectic. Between homeschooling one teen and one in highschool, and a husband who works all the time, I feel like I need to sleep for a week! Anyway, just praying for Summer to come soon.
I hope you all are doing well! Talk to you soon!!

Hey Jayne, my name is Rhonda and my son is Type 1 diabetic. I too am trying alternative treatments for his diabetes. The doctors treat as a one size fits all. He was diagnosed in 2005 at the age of 9, I have found that goldenseal helps with high blood sugars and ketones pretty quickly, Watch for lows. Also i believe the casein in cows milk was the innitial trigger for his diabetes and then just snowballed from there with vaccinations and all. He is adopted and his biological mother told me she gave him cows milk because it was cheaper and easier for her. There is a genetic protein difference in the black and white cows vs the jersey or gurnsey red cows. Raw milk from the red cow is supposed to be very healing to the intestines. Eating dill pickles can lower his bg 100 points in 20-30 minutes along with a bottle of water. It’s the vinegar in them. i think diabetes starts with a leaky gut and there are several things you can take to heal the gut. Raw milk is one, probiotics, digestive enzymes and hcl helps with enzyme activity. Hcl also helps kill bacteria, viruses and yeast. If they complain of indigestion try pickle juice if it helps it is low hcl not high. Everytime a patient complains of indigestion they prescribe prilosec. It helps briefly and then it’s back. At bed time he takes alpa lipoic acid, l-glutamine, taurine and n-acetyl cysteine to heal the gut.. They help with the dawning phenon. The immune system originates in the intestines. He seems either to react slowly or too fast to the novolog. I have researched a companie in the UK that still manufactures the pork and beef insulin. I have found a companie in Canada that sells that brand of insulin over the counter so it can be purchased online for 128.99 a bottle. We are going to try it. He does not drink any diet sodas as they cause bg to drop drastically and then he craves carbs so he is either 50 or 500. no happy medium. insulin usages has been cut in half by stopping the diet sodas. He eats and drinks pretty much what he wants only in moderation. Most diabetics are low in most all the vitamins. His vitamin D was 9. shouldnt be below 32. magnesium is always a little low. Both are a good deal better since stopping the diet drinks and working on the gut. I believe they are bad for the gut also. His chiropractor tested him for heavy metals and it showed up possitive. One other thing we have used to bring down a high blood sugar is Liquid Zeolite. It really works well and gets rid of ketonesIt also gets rid of heavy metals. .I always get a copy of his blood work and have gotten copies of blood work back to birth. We also supplement with 15 mg zinc and 1.5 copper along with a good whole food vitamin.I also found a good article on granny smith apples at bedtime to help with the dawning phenon. I have checked my son’s bg every hour from the time he goes to bed. What happens is he drops low and the liver kicks out glycogen to raise bg and diabetics cant regulate it so bg goes high causeing the “dawning phenom. If we regulate that, bg’s are good the rest of the day. He uses any where from 25-55 units a day depending on food and exercise.
so for now we are working on healing the gut and it has helped. The genetic insulins are made from the e choli bacteria. He always complains of a stomach ache. I am hoping the pork insulin will help with that. E choli is what causes food poisoning and i just cant seem to make myself believe that it is good for them. He is now 16 and he wants to give the pork insulin a try. Will let you know how it goes.
Let me hear some feed back.
Thanks Rhonda
Hi Rhonda! Thanks for writing and I apologize for taking so long to respond. Would love for you to join the Naturally Type 1 Facebook page. You have a lot of information to share and I know you and Sally, and others on the page would have tons to talk about. I hope you will find us there and post often!! Some things you’ve shared are very encouraging. I appreciate it!!

Jayne, my name is Jared, I am a type 1, I live in Lubbock, TX and I totally applaud your “against the grain approach to type 1 diabetes” I am ALWAYS searching the web for ANYONE that has been able to go off insulin that is a type 1, I KNOW that the human body has the ability to heal itself and I just KNOW that someone will eventually crack the code.
I would like to know more details about how your daughter went off insulin for a year?
was she doing all raw vegetables and fruits? Was she healthy during that time?
what were her #s? why did she go back on it?
Jared,
I too seek the same. Have you had any luck? I have heard some say they knew someone who got off insulin but then I never hear from them or the person who supposedly did again. Seeking this for myself as well so any and all collaboration would be great. You can contact me at deanervin at yahoo dot com if you like!
Good luck to you!
Dean
Hi Dean. I’ve heard of pre diabetics coming off of insulin. My daughter is on insulin. However, eating a diet that is very pH balanced is what helps most. We are in full blown teenage hormone/growth spurt years right now, so numbers are crazy at the moment. I wish you luck in your journey.
Jayne
Thanks for your blog. I am currently not on any medicine but have been monitoring my bs for a while now and it seems throughout the day it’s between 85 to 125 but then the next morning I think I have the “Dawn Phenomenon” with my hormones and I notice at 7:30am it’s a whooping 129 and then at 8:30 (with still nothing to eat except water) it goes down to 112. Strange, but I heard vinegar pills help. I just bought some today at the local grocery store. We’ll see if that changes anything. And I have been eating really well the past few months and have not seen any change in my morning bs.
129 would be a dream for us at this point. My daughters blood sugars are very high in the mornings despite trying alternative methods. She is a teen and is growing still, so this may be the reason. But it scares me. Your blood sugars seem really good to me. Best of luck to you. Oh, and you can try baking soda. You can check out Sally Roman’s site and also join the Naturally Type 1 group on Facebook to speak with Sally. She has tons of tricks and tips to help. Best of luck to you.
